CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Mass Culture and Society. Exhibit 2A

The McIntosh Gallery Invites Submissions for Juried Exhibition: MASS. Exhibit 2A, will use photo-based art to explore the cross influence and blurred boundaries between photography and the constructs of society & culture—a thematic exploration of the society and culture that creates and is created by photography. 

The McIntosh Gallery is working with artist / curator Michael L. Mullan to create this exhibition scheduled for January 11 – February 25, 2007.

Themes for submissions are as follows (these categories are ideas or anchors for the exhibition – starting or entrance points for the collective art works):

· Built Environment (constructed reality – the populated Canadian landscape) 

Focusing on issues related to our built environment including urban sprawl, land planning, structures (mental and physical), and individual or group existence in our dense Canadian landscape.  

· Cultural Images (diversity of existence found in the built environment)

Focusing on culture such as consumerism, pop culture, mass art, cultural issues – existence and life in Canada .

· Appropriated Images (photographs creating context)

Photo based art related to themes such as advertising and the media. 

Criteria for selection will include: quality of image—technical quality and aesthetic quality, and relevance to exhibition theme(s).    

Everyone is welcome to submit up to a maximum of 4 pieces for consideration. 

A $25 entry fee per artist must be included with submissions. 

Submissions can be mailed or dropped off at McIntosh Gallery during open hours from November 14 – November 28, 2006 only. 

McIntosh Gallery hours are Tuesday – Thursday 12 –7, Friday – Sunday 12 – 4.

To be considered, submissions must be packaged and include:
· artist name, full address with postal code, telephone number, fax number (if applicable), e-mail address

· representation of image, either as a digital file on CD (at a viewable size) or a print measuring no more than 8x12 inches, not framed or matted. 

· description of technical aspects of the photograph (i.e., how the image was created, using what tools / camera, film, digital etc; dimensions of final print; how image will be printed; dimensions of framed work; if a limited print; any other relevant information. 

· brief description of how the photo relates to the exhibition themes

· brief artist statement

· non refundable entry fee of $25 total payable in cash or by VISA

If selected, artists will be responsible for providing the following no later than

December 4 2006 : 

1) final artist statement;

2) final description of art work;

3) representation of work in electronic format.

All artists are responsible for delivery and pick up.  Only artists selected will be notified.  Physical submissions not selected will be available for pick up beginning Friday, December 1 st or by appointment. 

Artists selected will receive a $100 artist fee.  Any work sold during the exhibition is subject to a 25% commission of the sale by the McIntosh Gallery.  Copyright will remain with the artist.
