Legacies: Planned Giving

A LIVING MEMORY

Wilhelmina McIntoshSince 1942 Western has respected and honored the legacy of Wilhelmina McIntosh, the woman responsible for creating the McIntosh Gallery. The Gallery was planned largely as a tribute to the memory of her husband, John Gordon McIntosh. The speedy erection of the Gallery in the midst of wartime was the direct result of Mrs. McIntosh’s specific wishes at outlined in her will and previously negotiated with the University. Her estate included 67 artworks, $50,000 to build the new memorial art gallery and a $100,000 endowment for pictures, operating and student scholarships. This model of philanthropy resulted in Canada’s oldest university art gallery.

Others have since followed her lead and adopted the McIntosh Gallery as an heir for their estates, collections and archives. We invite you to consider the McIntosh Gallery in your planned giving for a lasting legacy and for enduring gifts in memoriam.

Your gift or bequest, large or small, will continue to enrich the lives of future generations, maintaining and strengthening the Collection and providing essential support for exhibitions, research, archives, publications and programs.

CHOICES FOR CREATING A LIVING MEMORY

Endowments you may choose to support include…

The William H. Abbott Fund, held at Western, was established in 1981 to honour this donor who gave nine artworks to the University in 1933. Proceeds are used in service of the Permanent Collection.

The Ontario Arts Endowment Fund for the McIntosh Gallery, held with the Ontario Arts Council Foundation, was established in 1998 through a Provincial match of cash gifts and supports ongoing operating and programming.

The Gillian Saward Memorial Fund, held at Western, is a memorial fund established in 1987 by the artist’s family. The gift also included the artist's artworks, journals, sketchbooks and archives. Proceeds are dedicated to purchase the works of emerging artists for the Permanent Collection.

The Maurice Stubbs Endowment, held with Foundation Western, was named in 2001 to honour the first curator and director of the McIntosh Gallery, with proceeds used for ongoing operating and programming.

The Tom Arnott and Arlene Kennedy Endowment was dedicated in 2002 to support McIntosh Gallery operations.

Create Your Own Living Memory Endowment
You may choose to establish an endowment, held at Foundation Western or the University, to benefit the McIntosh Gallery. This endowment can be in your name or that of a loved one and will be permanently invested, with the income used to support a project of your choice at the McIntosh Gallery.

Gifts of Art to the Permanent Collection
The McIntosh Gallery Permanent Collection Policy, approved by The University of Western Ontario Board of Governors in 1994, focuses on the art of London, art of national significance and international art that can be demonstrated to have had an influence on London art and artists. The McIntosh Gallery Acquisitions Committee determines the status of all gifts of art offered to the Permanent Collection.

The cost of insuring, storing, documenting, conserving, restoring, researching, transporting and exhibiting artworks is significant. In order to protect, preserve and enjoy the legacy of gifts of art, it is suggested that a gift of cash be used in support of these costs to accompany gifts of art whenever possible.

Artworks offered for consideration as a donation to the Permanent Collection and meeting criteria of national significance that also comply with the Collections Policy and are accepted by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board are eligible for a tax receipt that is exempt from capital gains tax.

Other gifts of art that conform to the Collections Policy and are accepted by the McIntosh Gallery Acquisitions Committee are eligible for a standard charitable tax receipt.

Planned Giving and Bequests
Bequests (gifts in your will), gifts of life insurance, gifts of retirement benefits, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities and gifts of residual interest - including art collections - are all welcome. Western's planned giving staff would be pleased to work with you on any of these vehicles.

Gifts of Personal Property
Gifts of personal property, including publicly listed securities, in support of the McIntosh Gallery are also welcome and may be dedicated to any area of your choice.

Gifts of Art Archives
Many personal records of artists, collectors, dealers and scholars that relate to the evolution of our visual culture are invaluable resources for research by students, faculty and public alike. The McIntosh Gallery invites gifts and bequests of materials such as slides, correspondence, documents, catalogues, journals, sketchbooks, digital records and other ephemera. We are fortunate to have the expert services of archive students and the use of archival storage at Western’s AARC in the D.B.Weldon Library.

Sponsorships
Special exhibitions, travelling exhibitions, publications, special events, speakers series, publications, art commissions, art purchases, book and journal purchases and archival research are some of the ways sponsorships may contribute to the McIntosh Gallery. Expert staff positions, short and long term, may also be sponsored and named as the donor wishes, including Curator in Residence, Registrar in Residence, Educator in Residence or Artist in Residence.

Benefits and Recognition
Planned gifts to support the McIntosh Gallery can provide significant tax advantages • now, and in the future. You and your financial advisor are invited to contact Western’s Gift Planning Office at (519)661-2199 or 1-800-258-6896(press 4) or email alumni@uwo.ca for additional information. Gifts to the McIntosh Gallery will receive formal recognition by the Gallery and The University of Western Ontario.

PAY IT FORWARD CAPITAL CHALLENGE

Pay It Forward: A way to make a difference in the future, without expectation of ‘payback’, without ‘paying back’ but paying into the future for unexpected, unimaginable results.

Consider a gift that will reverberate through time…an unconditional favour, an action plan for all time.

The McIntosh Gallery has matured as a public art gallery that exemplifies excellence in the service of visual art and our heritage as an integral part of our nation’s patrimony at a nationally recognized university.

In the continued pursuit of excellence and service, the McIntosh Gallery needs to expand, ideally through a new addition or wing to accommodate and consolidate operations; house, research and exhibit the Permanent Collection; and make the facility handicap accessible.

Architect’s plans created in 1993 await execution but funding is required. This challenge is to secure planned gifts through insurance and/or estate commitments that will be designated toward the eventual realization of this expansion. In time, a capital goal will attain the objective of the building at some future date.

A commitment has been made of a $250,000 universal life insurance policy, payable to Foundation Western, and held in a special McIntosh Gallery Capital Fund for expenditure once the required goal is met. The intent is that others will respond to the challenge and commit additional planned gifts to this end. The Pay It Forward Challenge is aimed at those philanthropists who are motivated to realize a goal, perhaps beyond their lifetime, for unforeseen future generations in the belief that the McIntosh Gallery is an essential enduring educational presence at Western and in the broader community.

The current estimated capital addition goal for the McIntosh Gallery is $5M. Should the goal be met, (whatever the equivalent cost may be in future years, adjusted for inflation), any funds remaining in the special McIntosh Gallery Capital Fund shall be transferred to endowments with Foundation Western to support McIntosh Gallery operations and programs. Others are encouraged to consider following this model. We would be pleased to meet with you at your convenience.
