Become a McIntosh Gallery Futurist with a planned gift

A planned gift is an Act of Faith.

Make an investment in programs to benefit future generations. Express your belief that the McIntosh Gallery is a sound, stable and important organization that deserves your long-term commitment. Because the need for beautiful, stimulating and though-provoking art is a need for today- and a need for tomorrow.

Your gift to the McIntosh Gallery Endowment through Foundation Western will provide investment funds to support and enhance exhibitions, research, publications and educational programs.

In return for your contributions you will receive certain income benefits and recognition for partnership in the preservation of our visual arts heritage here at Western.

Hot Tips for Collectors

1.  Make sure you like and enjoy the artwork, first and foremost.  Purchases for pure investment value are speculative and never guaranteed in a volatile market.

2.  Develop a good relationship with dealers and commercial galleries who carry the works of artists you admire.  Visit them often and ask questions about the artists and their art.

3.  The staff of your local public gallery are a valuable source of information on art and artists.  Use them!

4.  Look at as much art, of all kinds, that you can.  This is also known as developing a "Good Eye" or "connoisseurship".

5.  Familiarize yourself with prices, the market and auctions, through your local library usually.  Set a personal budget limit and stick to it!

6.  Are you purchasing an original artwork, one-of-a-kind object or artist's print, as opposed to a photographic reproduction or poster?

7.  Is the artwork in good condition?  Are you buying it from a reputable source who has the right to sell it?  Is it a fair price?  (There are no "treasures" or "great deals" in today's market -- everyone is too knowledgeable!).

8.  Taste in art, like taste in clothes or music, evolves and changes as your experience becomes more sophisticated.  Some purchases may "wear" with time and you may wish to consider donating the art to an appropriate public collection for a tax receipt.

Donations of artworks that are appropriate for the University collection are encouraged.  Tax receipts are issued for the fair market value.  The University of Western Ontario is a registered, non-profit charitable institution.
