In Memory of Dr. W. S. A. Dale

(1921-2022)

We are saddened to learn of the passing of respected Visual Arts professor, Dr. William Dale.

A specialist in medieval European art, he held curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Toronto (now Art Gallery of Ontario), and Vancouver Art Gallery. He also served as Acting Director and Associate Director of the National Gallery of Canada. In 1967, he arrived at Western to lead its newly created Department of Fine Arts and oversaw its expansion with the hiring of additional studio and art history faculty.

McIntosh Gallery enjoyed a long association with Dr. Dale who encouraged University Art Curator, Maurice Stubbs, to teach the Department’s first course in museum studies.

Our sincere condolences to the Dale family.
